How it Works

The mental routines in this book are based on the accompanying software, Telling the Time. The routines are designed to support your teaching of the time content descriptions that occur in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.

Year 1: Tell the time to the half-hour
Year 2: Tell time to the quarter hour, using the language of “past” and “to”
Year 3: Tell the time to the minute and investigate the relationship between units of time
Year 4: Convert between units of time, Use am and pm notation and solve simple time problems
Year 5: Compare 12 and 24 hour times and convert between them

There are no more Time statements for grades 6 and 7, however, from our experience, the Year 5 mental routines will be of benefit to older students too. But before you get started with the mental routines, we hope that you will find the first topic, Teaching for Deep Understanding, informative and useful. Reading the time in all its formats has become a vital modern life skill and we need to ensure that students are fully competent in all aspects of clocks, clockfaces, analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour times.

The download file for this resource contains a PDF version of the Teacher Notes that is suitable for use on a PC or iPad. In addition there are several other resources that will support your teaching of your students how to tell the time in analogue and digital formats..
