How Many Jellybeans?



We bought a can of paint on Sunday and were given this monster tin of Jellybeans with it. Johnny said to the sales-lady “But I don’t like Jellybeans ... yet!”. Ann wanted to open them – Johnny said “No!”

Of course for us connected mathematics is really important and we look for meaningful opportunities to pose questions or problems that will get students thinking mathematically. Before we knew it we had generated the following questions and ideas for this tin of Jelly Beans. You don’t need a tin of Jelly Beans. A jar of buttons or a large container of pebbles etc would generate similar questions. However, if you have some redecorating to do, now might be a good time to buy the paint.
