If there is one topic that occurs time and time again in the Australian Curriculum it is that of patterns within number sequences. A deep understanding of this is the basis of later work with formulas and algebra because what the student is being asked to do is to articulate a pattern as a rule such as ‘goes up 3 each time’ or goes down 5 each time’.
