Over the last 10 years, we have seen the improvement that can be made in classrooms where mental computation is fostered. Starting in the prep years, the ability to use mental computation strategies can be developed to a stage where in Year 4, the students are confident in their mathematical ability and can approach a problem with a range of strategies that will enable them to think mathematically about problems that are posed to them.
We are often asked about the stage at which the strategies should be introduced and this paper plots a developmental sequence that we think will suit the majority of students. But we are not trying to be prescriptive here; we would much rather that the strategies be introduced when the students are ready for them and that is a judgement that only the classroom teacher can make.
