Phase C: Beginning Number Study

In this phase, the emphasis is on working confidently with numbers 0 - 10 and on the representation of simple addition and subtraction situations in picture form, with objects and in number form. To help teachers assess the progress of children through this phase, we have devised 20 activities (from which a teacher can select a few) to give a complete coverage of the Phase C outcomes.

Example Activity

Activity 9 is designed to provide information about the way in which a child counts. It is based on the following BLM.

Show the children the page and ask them to estimate, which mouse is closest to the cheese, and to explain why they think that. Now ask the children how they can check their estimates. If necessary, draw attention to the squares and remind the children of their experiences of counting on on a number line or board game. You might like to suggest that the children use a different coloured pencil to show the routes for each mice.

As the children actually count the squares observe their approach and ask questions to probe what they can do with a little support, for example:

"You keep losing count. Is there anything you can do to stop you losing count?"

"Could you use written numbers to help you keep count?"

"You are touching and counting every square, is there a way of counting where you don’t need to touch every square"

"Would counting in 2s help at all?"

"How did you think of adding the numbers like that?"

This activity will enable you to note the following indicators:

3. counts rationally

3.1 tags each object being counted with one number name

3.3 identifies ‘how many’ in a group as the last number counted

5. compares and classifies numbers from 0 to 10

5.2 identifies and compares numbers using:

        ‘more’ and ‘less’

        ‘same’ and ‘different’

        ‘between’ and ‘next’

6. represents number from 0 to 10

6.2 reads and writes digit numerals

12. solves problems using a variety of strategies

12.1 makes reasonable estimates about the number of items in a group containing up to 10 items and verifies these estimates
