Phase D: Early Place Value

In this phase, the emphasis is on place value with numbers 0 - 100 (with grouping and ungrouping objects in 'tens' and 'ones'). Recall of addition facts to 20 and subtraction facts to 10 are used in additions and subtraction. To help teachers assess the progress of children through this phase, we have devised 20 activities (from which a teacher can select a few) to give a complete coverage of the Phase D outcomes.

Example Activity

Show the children the page, drawing attention to the four different ways that Jane has shown the number 36. Ask the children to explain each representation, to demonstrate how to enter the number on a calculator as well as how to show the number with the place-value materials that you have available. When the children have explained the relationship between each form of representation shown and the number 36 they can interpret and show the other children’s numbers in the three other ways. As they do so observe and ask questions to probe their understanding of 2-digit numbers, for example:

"How did you know that five 10s and three 1s makes the number 53?"

"Does it matter which order you enter the 5 and the 3 on the calculator? Why/why not?"

"How do the numbers on the place-value chart match with the straws shown in the picture?"

Finally encourage the children to choose a number of their own to show in four ways. Some children may choose a 3 digit number, allow this and observe their thinking as they try to show their number.

This activity will enable you to note the following indicators:

4 demonstrates an understanding of place-value in 2-digit numbers

4.1 represents and explains the value of each digit in a number

6 represents 2-digit numbers

6.1 represents numbers using a variety of concrete materials

6.2 reads and writes digit numerals

6.3 reads and writes word numerals

6.4 matches and explains the links between concrete, pictorial, verbal and symbolic representations

13 can use a calculator appropriately

13.1 uses the correct order of number, operation and equals keys in addition and subtraction calculations
