Interactive Whiteboards
Starting last year, we have been working with schools in the
Logan-Beaudesert District to investigate the use of interactive whiteboards in maths teaching.
As a result of this work, and after improving our first draft in the
light of teacher comments, we have completed four software titles (with
full Teachers Guide) under the following headings:
100 Square - using the 100 Square a the basis of mental
routines that range from simple number finding through
addition/subtraction routines to mini-investigations based on the 100 Square.
Coin Mat - based on Australian Currency, the features of
this program range from simple
coin recognition activities through to giving change and suggest ways
in which the IAWB can be used to emphasise such mathematical thinking
tools such as the open number line.
Dice Strings - focuses on the use of mental strategies to
add strings of numbers, such as 4, 3, 6, 2 and 5, where you might add
4 and 6 (a rainbow fact), then 3 and 2 (a near double) making 5 which
can be added to the remaining 5 (double) ... giving an over all total
of 10.
Fingertip Facts - giving
students practice in numbers facts for +, - , × and ÷. This
program can be used with the whole class or with individuals ... and
has levels of expertise that ensure that, at the super-expert level,
you really do have your number facts at your fingertips.
The software comes with a site licence
that enables it to be used anywhere within the purchasing school.
We have also been collaborating with Dr Roger Duke,
University of Queensland, on this project as he has already made a
number of contributions to the literature on this field.
Australia has become a growing market for the Interactive Whiteboard
and if you haven't already done so, you really should visit sites such

From the early days at Richardson Primary (ACT) we are moving fast in
the rate at which we are adopting this new teaching device. And what do
you know ... the kids love it!
