Problematised Situations
This page leads to the examples of problematised situations at different
levels and within different contexts. The links at the sides will help
you locate the type of activity that we have included in this section.
By the way, we are really pleased to have teacher input on the
site so if you have a problem or have innovated on a problem please send
it to the Numeracy Block Club. Our
first examples are focused on Level 1 and use the book One is a
snail, Ten is a crab. Another example from Level 1 is based on the
well-known Hey Diddle Diddle.
The Power of Narrative
We are being urged to incorporate productive pedagogies into our
teaching/learning situations. So recently Ann has been setting
problematised situations that are realistic to the learners (and which
as such are usually connected to the real world of the learner) in a
narrative context. The link to Narrative at the side gives the details.
Innovating on a Theme
When students work on a problematised situation there are many
opportunities to see a range of strategies and to reflect on them.
Sometimes too it is evident that students need more experiences with
similar problems. Innovating on a known problem makes it easy to create
similar problems.
Fix-up Strategies
This activity provided a useful opportunity to demonstrate to the
children that fixing up an error is not only okay but also part of
everyday situations. As the students worked we were able to gain
information about their counting strategies and the methods that they
used for adding more and for removing some. And check out the new Xmas
