Here are a couple of problematised situations with an Xmas feel that
you might like to try ... or improvise on!
A Grade 1 Class has been saving coins so that
they can buy games for the Smith Family Charity at Christmas. They
have saved:
235 five cent coins
115 ten cent coins
86 twenty cent coins
95 fifty cent coins.
Please help them work out:
- How much have they saved so far?
- How many compendiums of games can they buy
if they are $16.25 cents each?
- How much more do they need to save to meet
their target of ten games for the Smith Family charity?
Note: Change the numbers to meet
the needs of your range of learners. Present the second and third parts
of the problem as the students complete the first part.
Encourage a full range of strategies for solving the problems and have
coins available for those who might need the support.
A class is making Christmas cookies to raise
money for a good cause. They have orders for 45 packets of cookies
each with 12 cookies in.
How many cookies will they need to make?
They plan on selling the cookies at $2
35 a packet.
How much money will that raise altogether?
Note: As with the earlier problem
change the amounts to suit the needs of your learners and encourage a
wide range of strategies.
