What do we need to do to prevent the numeracy gap?

Noticing and acting quickly is a pedagogical art form that all teachers need to be skilled at. Noticing, observing, listening, probing and then acting quickly to provide supportive measures ASAP is the only step that will help us to reduce the widening numeracy gap, that exists in each classroom or better still, to nip it in the bud before it even develops in the first place.

From two weeks into the school year, we should already be working on reducing or preventing the numeracy gap.

I am SO passionate about helping teachers to ensure that they give EVERY child in their class the best chance to be numerate, that I developed a new, online course: ‘Preventing the Numeracy Gap’. It is for early years educators (preschool, foundation/reception) in particular but can also be used with year 1 and 2 students who have fallen behind.

Testing without testing

I have had particularly strong feedback on 'Testing without testing'. What teachers have loved is the suggestions that enable teachers to move away from one-on-one, time consuming testing to observing students as they work on meaningful tasks and participate in whole class carpet activities.

It is crucial that students are engaged in responsible and purposeful activities that demonstrate worthwhile mathematics and mathematical thinking not just rote or procedural activities. As we monitor students we can notice what they do know, can do and choose to do and then build from what we see. We can then plan for immediate targeted action.

Trial teachers say that this method of observing and reacting has been really challenging for them but has transformed the way they now plan to prevent the numeracy gap.
