Calculators are not just for finding answers; they can also be used to:
- find the correct answer before working on the challenge, thus encouraging safe exploration,
- check that the key sequence created for the challenge actually does what the student thought it would,
- relieve the burden on working memory so that students can do the hard thinking and let the calculator do the calculating.
The material is also set within the context of an inquiry that will enable the teacher to show where the students started from and where they have reached in their exploration of multiplicative thinking.
