The questions and lesson plans for six mental routines will help you build your students’ ability with multiplicative strategies. Central to this process is helping students to acquire and use the language of multiplication and the package offers a word-wall that will help in this respect. The mental routine will enable you to observe:
- who is participating and who is not,
- what strategies the students are using,
- how confident students are with the strategies.
The material is also set within the context of an inquiry that will enable the teacher to show where the students started from and where they have reached in their exploration of multiplicative thinking.
Building Multiplicative Strategies – Mental Routines supports the teaching of the ACM Number and Place Value strands for Year 3: ACMNA057, Year 4: ACMNA076 and Year 5: ACMNA100.
