Each mental routine:

  • introduces and repeatedly uses correct mathematical terminology needed to be able to communicate about place value,
  • provides closed questions which lay the foundation for the more complex thinking needed for the open-ended questions that follow,
  • includes 2- and 3-step open questions requiring adaptive reasoning, not simply recall of facts,
  • provides a guessing and game-like situation in the flip questions where students apply the vocabulary and reasoning that they have been learning.
