The role that games play in the conceptual understanding of and fluency with subtraction is not to be underestimated. In their simplest form the games presented here allow students to:

  • model the process of subtraction with materials,
  • have fun practice (repetition) of counting back,
  • become familiar with recording on numbered pathway games and empty number lines
  • begin to ‘just know’ or predict the answer to a count-back 1, 2 or 3.

The  activities in this book support the teaching of Foundation: ACMNA004 and Year 1: ACMNA015.
