We need to develop flexibility as well as fluency with subtraction and that starts in the early years. The mental routines form the third part of a series that gives a comprehensive coverage of this topic. This component gives the questions and lesson plans for six mental routines that will help you build your students’ ability with subtraction strategies.
Central to this process is helping students to acquire and use the language of subtraction and the package offers a word-wall that will help in this respect. The mental routine will enable you to observe:
- Who is participating and who is not
- What strategies the students are using
- How confident students are with the strategies
