We need to develop flexibility as well as fluency with subtraction and that starts in the early years. The problematized situations form the second part of a series that gives a comprehensive coverage of this topic.

Problematized situations:

• Are everyday situations familiar to the learner,
• Create scenarios that can be resolved in a number of different ways,
• Have multiple entry and exit points,
• Lead to developing deep understanding of the big ideas in maths,
• Allow students to make choices about how to use what they do know and can do.

Problematized Situations are planned specifically to provide challenges that lead to the discovery of the big ideas in maths and to provide just-in-time learning situations that the teacher can capitalize on and formalize. Students work in groups where collaboration rather than competition leads to the development of a community of maths learners.
