Traditionally word problems have been delivered on worksheets with little teaching or support provided. It is no wonder then that many students and teachers alike groan at the thought of word problems. We suggest that, as you use these word problems, you use the STAR problem solving model (poster packs available) to:

  • explicitly teach and scaffold students to ‘sort out the problem’ and, where applicable, to create a visual of the problem
  • encourage think time with questions such as “Have you done a problem like this before?”
  • encourage dialogue, sharing and comparing as the students solve the problem

Also, ask the students to identify their STAR quality, e.g., “I sorted out the problem on my own. I remembered this was like the balloons problem.”

The  activities in this book support the teaching of Foundation: ACMNA004 and Year 1: ACMNA015.
