The Fractions strategy mat provides a variety of working spaces for students. Side 1 can be used as a space for representing fractions using:

  • Area models
  • Set or quantity models
  • Linear or measurement models

For instance, Side 1 encourages students  to show four different representations of, for example,  the fraction ¾.

Side 2 of the Fractions mat shows connections between different representations of the same fraction. It allows students to:

  • See the fraction in 3 different ways
  • Say and name the fraction and see how to write it in symbols and words
  • Count in fraction jumps along a number line
  • Compare fractions to ½
  • Position a fraction between 0 and 1
