Place Value and its associated vocabulary is central to the development of mathematical thinking at all levels of the Primary Curriculum, but research shows that many students lack fluency with this topic.

This Starting Point provides a number of resources to enable teachers to ensure that their students have ‘got’ place value and that the associated vocabulary is part of the language that students speak confidently.

The mental routine is central to the teaching approach and it is followed up by a place value game, Closest to 1 500,  and associated problematized situation. We have also provided resources for two focused learning episodes.

This material supports the teaching of:

Year 3: ACMNA052:  Recognise, model, represent and order numbers to at least 10 000
Year 3: ACMNA053: Apply to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least 10 000 to assist calculations and
solve problems
Year 4: ACMNA072: Recognise, represent and order numbers to at least tens of thousands
Year 4: ACMNA073: Apply to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least tens of thousands to assist
calculations and solve problems
