This course has the following components.

1. Towards an Understanding of Trusting the Count: A close look at what trusting the count actually entails and some ideas about how to know which students do trust the count and which students don’t trust the count.

2. Conditions for Learning and Meaningful Counting: What conditions for learning need to be in place to ensure students have the experiences necessary to gain deep understanding and success with trusting the count.

3. Perceptual and Conceptual Subitizing: A detailed look at visual strategies that lead to flexible conceptual subitizing. an important aspect of trusting the count.

4. Magnitude and Estimation: Connecting counting and visual strategies to the ideas of comparing, quantifying and magnitude that are fundamental to the understanding of trusting the count and place value.

5. Signing Off using Formative Assessment: A look at formative assessment and how you know when to sign off with a student, absolutely confident that they do actually trust the count.

While the phrase trusting the count is not formally a part of the ACM, this course supports the teaching of numeracy throughout in the Primary Years.
