About BMS Number Talk Teaching Strategies:
Learn about the whole Building Multiplicative Strategies package
The pattern-based sequences foster the expectation that students should always self-talk:
“Do I need to work at every one of these or are some related?”
“What do I know that will help me with this one?”
“What relationships can I see?”
Thinking in this way develops multiplicative thinking and proportional reasoning.
There are also suggestions for allowing about 5 minutes for students to share their estimates of what the result of a multiplication might be.
The material is also set within the context of an inquiry that will enable the teacher to show where the students started from and where they have reached in their exploration of multiplicative thinking.
The download for this product is a .zip compressed folder that contains 3 files.
When decompressed, the folder contains a .pdf file describing the teaching strategies.
The Lesson Plan file is accompanied by Teacher Slides for use during the lesson and a Student File that gives number talk sequences.
This download is intended for personal use and should not be shared with other teachers.

Multiplicative thinking has been shown to be a crucial part in the development of numeracy. The number talk process encourages students explore and discuss strategies by completing a 4-frame poster to show different routes to the solution.
