About Early Subtraction (Complete):
Learn about the whole Early Subtraction package
Subtraction has many facets which include strategies, representations and contexts. This series covers this topic comprehensively, even though many of the components can be used separately when the teacher sees a need for a particular aspect that needs attention. The series consists of:
1. Strategy lessons:
Strategy 1 – Finger Gnosis
Strategy 2 – Conceptual Subitizing
Strategy 3 – Count Back
Strategy 4 – Count On or Count Back?
Strategy 5 – Working with Unknowns
2. Mental routines
3. Problematized situations
4. Word problems
5. Number talk
The material is also set within the context of an inquiry that will enable the teacher to show where the students started from and where they have reached in their exploration of subtraction.
You may purchase these resources as a whole package or access the components separately when you see a need for attention on a particular aspect of early subtraction.
Are you having an impact?
John Hattie has coined the phrase 'know thy impact'. Teachers are more and more being expected to know if they are having sufficient impact on their students' learning. Teachers are also expected to involve students in knowing the learning intentions and to be involved in knowing how well they are meeting the success criteria. With this in mind, we have planned this mini-classroom based inquiry such that we can begin to collect data about our impact: what's working, what we can achieve and how we can share the learning journey with our students.
The download for this product is a .zip compressed folder that contains 7 sub-folders, one for each of the above modules. Within a module you will find lesson plans and support materials. Each Lesson Plan file is accompanied by Teacher Slides for use during the lesson. There are also Student files that give the problem statements for easy display to students. The modules can also be purchased separately.
This download is intended for personal use and should not be shared with other teachers.

In this Natural Maths course, with Ann Baker, you will develop your skill in creating problematized situations. Problematized situations form part of a structured rigorous numeracy block.
The proven Natural Maths STAR model is used as the structure for these problem solving books matched to the Australian Curriculum.
The role that games play in the conceptual understanding of and fluency with subtraction is not to be underestimated. The games presented here allow students to:
- have fun practice (repetition) of counting back,
- become familiar with recording on numbered pathway games and empty number lines,
- begin to just know or predict the answer to a count-back 1, 2 or 3.
The Card Game transitions students from using a table of values to linear equations painlessly. The card game has been used successfully from grade six to grade ten.
Explore hatching patterns in this problematized situation. Designed to build your students' number sense and number patterning skills, it uses a real life context to offer starting points and 'sting in the tail' challenges to address curriculum outcomes Foundation to Year 3.
