Unlike other fraction resources, this product focuses on the quantity model as well as the area model for understanding halves, quarters and eighths.

The types of fractional experiences that we offer to students need to acknowledge both their prior experiences and real world connections. Links need to be made between finding a fraction of a shape and a fraction of a quantity and we need to emphasise the notion that fractions and division are related not separate concepts.

Our aim in this package is to provide experiences that will meet the Year 2 topic: Year 2: Recognise and interpret common uses of halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections (ACMNA033)

The package contains:

• Two mental routines and five problematised situations on the topic of fractions. This is a PDF file that can be loaded onto your computer or iPad for use in the classroom.
• A PowerPoint file that includes a Fraction Anchor Chart covering the key terms for Grade 2 and a Top Five checklist.
• A Filemaker GO app that gives you an interactive program on fractions. The activity shown here is based on familiar shapes and allows the student to show their understanding of fractions as they create their own design of half and quarter circles.
