We have designed the Strategy Mats to provide a tool for students when working on developing fluency with number facts. From our observations students need visual aide-memoires: reminders of what they have been learning and prompts to use the strategies learnt.

The Addition Mat 1  provides a working space for students. It can be used as a place where cards are dealt, dice are thrown, or counters dropped to create contexts for addition. For instance, if a 4 and a 6 are showing on a pair of dice, a student can mark the 6 and 4 on the rainbow, tracing from the 6 to the 4 to make 10. This can then be recorded in the mini-chunking boxes and on the empty number line.

This strategy mat also shows connections between different representations of the same mathematical idea. The mat allows students to:

  • See the addition visually as two subitizable groups.
  • Say the strategy they want to use – by circling it.
  • Show an addition using mini-chunking and the Secret Code, or on the empty number line.

This Addition Mat supports the teaching of  Year 1: ACMNA015 and Year 2: ACMNA030.
