This strategy mat provides working spaces for students and encourages the use of the language of subtraction, the choice of a strategy and practice in using two different types of representation. Suppose we give the students a subtraction problem such as:

“I made 8 gingerbread men yesterday and 4 have already been eaten. How many are left?”

They can now write the number sentence, select an appropriate strategy and complete the mini-chunking diagram and empty number line on the strategy mat. They can then write a similar subtraction problem of their own in the Write a problem to match space provided.

This addition mat supports the teaching of Year 1: ACMNA015 and Year 2: ACMNA029 and ACNMN030.
