The Fractions strategy mat provides a variety of working spaces for students. Side 1 can be used as a space for representing fractions using:
- Area models
- Set or quantity models
- Linear or measurement models
For instance, Side 1 encourages students to show four different representations of, for example, the fraction ¾.
Side 2 of the Fractions mat shows connections between different representations of the same fraction. It allows students to:
- See the fraction in 3 different ways
- Say and name the fraction and see how to write it in symbols and words
- Count in fraction jumps along a number line
- Compare fractions to ½
- Position a fraction between 0 and 1
This Fractions mat supports the teaching of Year 4: ACMNA077 and ACMNA078, Year 5: ACMNA102 and ACMNA103.
