Central to the way we work, is the idea that an ideal maths lesson is a Numeracy Block that consists of three distinct parts. These are the:

  • mental routine (whole class) – the topic for this online course
  • main part of the lesson, being a problematized situation, game or investigation (groups, pairs or individual work) or strategy lesson
  • reflection to share and extend thinking and formalize learning (coming together as a community of learners).

In this course we show how to develop target strategies, build an appropriate vocabulary list and pose questions at the three levels, closed, open and flip. By the end of the course, you will have a kit-bag of practical ideas for use with your class as well as a clear understanding of the process, so that you can confidently create your own mental routines.

This course supports the teaching of the ACM for all topics in the Primary Years.
