From simple coin recognition to quite high-level investigations, the Coin Mat is a powerful tool for developing student confidence with coins and their associated language. The activities given here can be carried out using only the mini-whiteboards that have become a hallmark of mental routines.
As well as using mini-whiteboards in response to a challenge, the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) can be used to enable students to share ideas and to focus attention on key aspects of solutions. The software displays a Coin Mat on the whiteboard and cells can be coloured by touching and annotations can be added as ideas are shared and discussed.
This addition mat supports the teaching of Year 1: ACMNA017, Year 2: ACMNA034 and Year 3: ACMNA059.
